Insulation

Picture showing areas of heat loss in a typical home

Poorly insulated homes lose large amounts of heat. This wastes energy, increases fuel bills, and harms the environment.

If you are installing these measures you may also consider draughtproofing, and heat recovery ventilation.

Prices and fuel bill savings shown are based on a typical gas heated three-bedroomed semi-detached house. Prices may be higher or lower accrding to property type and size. Phone for more details. Prices subject to change, correct 18/11/02.

Walls

The walls of your home lose more heat than any other area. This can be substantially reduced by insulation:

Cavity Wall Insulation

Cavity wall insulation is a straightforward job, done from the outside of your property, and finished in a day.

Do I need it?
If your home was built 1930 - 1976 you probably have uninsulated cavity walls - check by looking at the brick pattern.

If your wall looks like this you probably have cavity walls

Solid Wall Insulation

Solid wall insulation is more expensive than cavity wall insulation, but it can be fitted cost effectively when a house (or room) is being renovated or decorated. If your wall looks like this you probably have solid walls

Do I need it?
If your home was built before 1930 you probably have walls without cavities - check by looking at the brick pattern. Solid walls can be insulated internally - with sheets of material similar to wallpaper but about inch (10mm) thick - or externally with rendering.

More information:
Solid wall insulation is not available through Housewarmers due to low levels of demand; it can be less cost effective than other types of insulation and can cause disruption to internal decor and/or external house finishes. We are therefore unable to negotiate the bulk discounts that we can offer for other measures. However, if you are intersted in solid wall insulation we recommend you contact:

Loft Insulation

Up to 25% of your heat can be lost through the roof. Insulation in your loft you can help prevent this. This can be done very easily and quickly by trained professionals, with no mess. They'll also insulate any pipes in your loft as well as your loft hatch.

Do I need it?
The recommended thickness to have is 10" (250mm). If your home was built before 1990 you probably have less than 4" (100mm) and it will be worth topping up. Use the ruler below to check.

Glazing

Up to 10% of your heat can be lost through the windows: installing double glazing can help prevent this. Double glazing can also reduce heat lost through draughts, and block out external noise. If you wish to keep your present windows you can install 'secondary' double glazing behind your existing glazing.

Double Glazing is not as cost effective as loft insulation or wall insulation as it is relatively expensive and far less heat is lost through the windows than through the roof or the walls. However, it is worthwhile if your roof and walls are insulated and if your windows need replacing.

Prices:

Replacement windows:

Secondary glazing:

from £260/m2

from £180/m2

Price for full insulation will depend on individual property.

Draughtproofing

Reducing draughts helps slow down the rate at which warm, inside air is replaced by cold, outside air. Most draughtproofing materials are flexible strips which fill unnecessary gaps in doors and windows.

If you are considering other insulation measures we will include a quote for draughtproofing in your free quote.
